Rabaul

Rabaul    Mixed media on canvas       Roger Smith        1979
I produced this painting while still living and working in Goroka and gifted it to my friends from Wanganui, Michelle and Ean Cantell, who were living in Lae at the time I went 'finis'.

While rather abstract expressionist in style, it reflected my response to the the turbulent nature of the volcano that over looked the peaceful tranquillity of the bay and palms.

As it turn out this proved to be rather prophetic as Rabaul's volcano (Tavurvur) is one of the most violent in the region and destroyed the town in 1994 when it erupted again.
